We’ve been told over and over that sodas are bad for us, but how bad? Many of us don’t even drink sodas. What about other sugary drinks such as our fancy coffee drinks, Red Bull®, Monster drinks® and other Energy drinks?

We are experiencing energy crashes in our workplace, schools, and home. I see kids walking to school with giant coffee and energy drinks in their hands. There is always a line at the neighborhood coffee shop. So what is this doing to our children and to us?

Consuming caffeinated sugary drinks contributes to the epidemic of Obesity, Diabetes Type 2, ADHD, Anxiety, Osteoporosis, and Immune system disorders. Do you know that Diabetes Type 2 (both adults and children) have increased 90% over the last 10 years? This is a preventable lifestyle disease.

If you drink a soda, it will contain at least 10 teaspoons of sugar, Monster drinks have 14 teaspoons, and a Caramel Coffee Frappuccino® contains a whopping 17 teaspoons!

Our body only requires 1 teaspoon of sugar (glucose) in our blood stream at all times. Yes, you read that right, just 1 teaspoon! What’s happening with the rest of the sugars?

While drinking a caffeinated sugar drink, it immediately hits your system and will increase blood sugar levels. You will feel a “high” as blood sugar is circulating. Within 20 minutes the blood sugar will spike and call for Insulin to be released. This takes sugar out of your blood stream and puts it into your cells, liver and storage. You all know your storage spots, belly, love handles and butt.

Within 40 minutes, the caffeine is absorbed, blood pressure increases, pupils dilate, nervous energy increases and hot flashes appear. This increases cortisol, which tells your liver to dump even more sugar into your body. Now, you really feel stimulated!

Within 45 minutes, your brain increases Dopamine the neurotransmitter which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain, the same way heroin does. Now you are addicted to feeling high, and the sugar that caused it!

Within 60 minutes, caffeine (a diuretic) will cause your body to pee calcium, magnesium, and zinc, along with important electrolytes out of your body. This sets you up for Osteoporosis and dehydration.

“Caffeine has a six-hour half-life, which means it takes a full twenty-four hours to work its way out of your system. Have a cup of joe at eight a.m., and you’ll still have 25% of the caffeine in your body at eight p.m. Anything your drink after noon will still be at 50% strength at bedtime. Any caffeine in your bloodstream- with negative effects increasing with the dose-makes it harder to fall asleep”.[1]

Also, within 60 minutes, the stimulating effect will start to drop and you will feel the “sugar crash” as blood sugar falls. The high you felt on the Blood Sugar Roller Coaster comes down fast and you feel irritable, shaky and unable to focus.

You then need more stimulation to get through the rest of your day. You need to get back on that Blood Sugar Roller Coaster to feel “better”. So you head for another energy drink, coffee, or muffin. Different names, but the results are the same. In other words, more sugar, or caffeine.

Is this how you want to spend your day? I have never liked roller coaster rides as they make me feel crappy. How about you?

Blood sugar levels are responsible for how you feel, look and think. Personally, I feel so many kids are labeled ADHD when all they need is more fat and protein in their diet and eliminate the sugar and chemicals.

Get off the roller coaster and replace caffeinated sugary drinks with water. For taste add in lemon, lime or even a grapefruit slice. You can drink sparkling water with a small splash of unsweetened juice, or if you need some caffeine have green tea, it contains the brain stabilizing L-Theanine to balance the affects caffeine.

My favorite drink is water, 1-2 T. apple cider vinegar, grated ginger root, fresh lemon squeezed in and a drop of lemon flavored stevia. If you don’t want the stevia, add a t. of raw honey. I drink this hot in the winter, and cold in the summer.

Just think of the money you will save not needing to buy these costly drinks anymore! Plus, how good you will feel!
